My special expertise

Prevention, Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation

As you can see from my professional background, I have many years of experience across the full spectrum of modern cardiology. My particular clinical and research focus, however, is on identifying heart failure using echocardiography and treating patients with pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-P, CRT-D). Pacing by a pacemaker or ICD can contribute to the development or worsening of heart failure. On the other hand, specialized pacing techniques—such as cardiac resynchronization therapy—can also be used to improve heart failure. Recognizing this problem can be challenging. Treatment and therapy optimization require considerable expertise and time, including a combined assessment using ECG and echocardiography and often repeated reprogramming of the pacing system. Because this work is time-consuming, it can be difficult to provide adequately in a statutory-insurance practice or in the often hectic hospital environment. As a result, some patients may remain untreated, and their heart failure may continue to worsen if it is not addressed in time. To help prevent this, cardiological assessment should ideally begin much earlier, with a preventive approach and early risk management to optimize blood-pressure treatment and help prevent coronary artery disease (CAD).
